I’ve been waiting to post something about Adam Yauch and his recent passing until I had the time to properly sit down to write. But even now…I’ve been home from tour almost a week and I’m still kinda at a loss for words.
Obviously, I never knew the man and can only imagine the devastation his band mates, wife, daughter and friends must be feeling. I’m truly heartbroken and that’s just coming from a fan. This man not only made contributions to the worlds of film and hip-hop (not to mention music as a whole), but also actively worked for the needs of others. Adam Yauch was a talented mother-fucker without a doubt, but more than anything, he was a stand up human being and THAT deserves honor.
I’ve seen The Beastie Boys more than I have any other band and every time, they’ve topped what they did the night before. They gifted me with terrific memories with friends, special guests like Biz Markie and Tribe Called Quest and at their shows in later years, played extended instrumental sets that boasted skills you sometimes forgot they had. Like a fine wine, these men got better with age and only hungrier to deliver.
Of course, it’s sad to think about never seeing them again as a trio but whether it’s through his music, his art or his activism, Adam Yauch’s life will continue to be celebrated.
